LOS LOBOS TO PERFORM BENEFIT CONCERT AT ELAC

College Alums Come Back Home to Raise Money for Scholarships

Monterey Park . February 9th, 2004 . Popular rock group and local favorite, Los Lobos, is coming back home to East Los Angeles. The group will perform a scholarship benefit concert Wednesday, February 18th, at East Los Angeles College ’s Ingalls Auditorium/Edison Center for the Performing Arts. The benefit concert, sponsored by the East Los Angeles College Foundation and Edison International, hopes to raise thousands of dollars for scholarships to ELAC students.

“For Los Lobos to come here for such a good cause really shows the band’s commitment to helping the community they came from,” ELAC President, Ernest H. Moreno, said. “A lot of students here can really use scholarship money to enhance their education. We’re grateful Los Lobos recognizes that.”

Los Lobos is one of the most famous and popular bands to come out of the Los Angeles area. The group was founded in the early 1970's by ELAC alums David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez, and Conrad Lozano, who met as students at Garfield High School. The band has put out numerous albums, including 2002’s Good Morning Aztlan. It plans to release a new album in May entitled The Ride. Los Lobos has worked on soundtracks for movies including La Bamba, Desperado and From Tusk Til Dawn.

The Ingalls Auditorium/Edison Center for the Performing Arts has brought many exciting programs free to the community. Through initial support from Edison International and other generous sponsors, it has been able to host an incredible number of cultural arts opportunities free to ELAC students and the community, including performances by the LA Opera and the LA Philharmonic.

The East Los Angeles College Foundation has increased scholarship revenue to over $200,000 since 1999 and has developed a strong endowment base. It has sponsored numerous recent events and projects at ELAC including The Anguiano Mural Project at the Edison Center. This is a mural depicting the history of Mexican art by famous Mexican artists, Raul Anguiano.

The Ingalls Auditorium/Edison Center for the Performing Arts is located at 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez in Monterey Park. Tickets are $35 for general seating and $25 for students. The doors open at 7pm.
