Mervyn’s Presents the Third Annual Latino Cultural Arts Festival 2004
March 28, 2004 · Ingalls Auditorium/Edison Center for the Performing Arts

Ramón S. Ramos Memorial Scholarship Concurso de Ballet Folklorico

The East Los Angeles College Foundation is holding the Fourth Annual Ramón S. Ramos Folklorico competition commemorating Ramón S. Ramos at ELAC’s annual Latino Cultural Arts Festival. The ELAC Foundation is grateful to have Mervyn’s sponsor the art festival since 2002. Every year we have participants from all over Southern California competing in the folklorico contest. This year, we invite you to join and compete in any five divisions (Pre-School, Elementary, Junior High School, High School, and Adult) in partner / group categories vying for top trophies and awards with folklorico enthusiasts and the community. All proceeds generated will go towards the Ramón S. Ramos Memorial Scholarship Endowment fund to offer annual scholarships East Los Angeles College students.

After the competition, at 3pm, Plaza de la Raza will present a free arts and crafts workshop along with mariachi music.

Scheduled for the evening of the Festival is the OZOMATLI educational benefit concert. The multi-cultural rock/funk/pop Grammy Award-winning group OZOMATLI will be performing LIVE playing their incredible and popular act with its broad stylistic sounds and notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa.

Ozomatli is a world recognized band to come out of the Los Angeles area formed in 1995. The diverse and eclectic group self-produced its very first indie EP. Since then, they have been a big hit with everyone from Latin music fans to hardcore hip-hoppers with their high energy live performances and amazing infusion of world music. The band earned a 2001 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album for Embrace the Chaos. Other albums cut by the group include Ozomatli and Coming Up. A new album is expected for release sometime this year. With numerous appearances in television and motion pictures, they have also opened/performed with some of music industry greats – Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews.
