FACTS
The Raúl Anguiano Mural Project will be painted at East
Los Angeles College in the foyer of the Ingalls Auditorium / Edison
Center for the Performing
Arts.
The mural is part of a long-standing college commitment to bring
art education and events to the East Los Angeles community that
includes providing a venue for performing arts including theater,
dance and music presentations. The Vincent Price Gallery features
free exhibitions from the permanent collection and guest artists.
Work on the cartoon for the mural began August 1, 2001. A ceremony
featuring the first brush stroke will be held on Wednesday, August
29, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the foyer of Ingalls Auditorium. The completion
date for the mural is February 2002.
The mural will depict the story of Mexican art from the Mayan
period through the 20th century. Raúl Anguiano will weave
autobiographical images throughout the piece that celebrates his
association with the major Mexican artists of the past decades.
Portraits of the three great pillars of the Mexican mural tradition,
Jose Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Diego Rivera
and other major artists of the past century will be featured.
The mural will painted with acrylics on linen stretched over wood
panels mounted to the walls with a metal superstructure. The composition
is based on the golden section (seccion de oro) a classical rule
used by great muralists since the Italian Renaissance.
The mural will be the largest the octogenarian Anguiano has produced,
measuring more than 70 square meters. It is approximately 68 feet
long by 13 feet high.
Numerous events are planned to allow students from the college
and community to experience the creation of the mural. Over 30,
000 visitors are expected during the seven-month creative process.
