The Foundation has
played a crucial role over the years sponsoring numerous ELAC programs
and creating scholarship programs and awards for ELAC students.
The Foundation has engaged in many fundraising activities to add
over $300,000 to its scholarship and endowment base since 1999.
In addition, the Foundation is responsible for the fiscal management
and administration of its scholarships and endowments throughout
the calendar year.
Individual Scholarship Offerings
Brad Pye Jr. Journalism Award
The Brad Pye Jr. Journalism Award was established by the East
Los Angeles College Foundation through a gift from the Daniel
Towler Foundation developed to aid Journalism students reach
their personal potential and educational goals by providing
financial assistance to further their academic or vocational
education.
ELAC Administrators’ (Dave Fisher) Scholarship Award
ELAC Administrator Dave Fisher upon his retirement requested
in lieu of gift for his retirement party, that donations be
made to the East Los Angeles College Foundation in order to
establish a scholarship fund. Through payroll deduction, other
administrators have participated in order to institutionalize

to help an ELAC student reach their personal potential and
educational goals by providing financial assistance to further
their academic or vocational education.
L. & P. Hamblin Nursing/Social Work Scholarship
A donation from L. & P. Hamblin was received in 2003 to establish
a scholarship award to assist students who are aspiring to become
future registered nurses and/or social workers. The scholarship’s
purpose is aid students in their goals by providing financial
assistance to further their education. Please review the application
for specific criteria. Awards will be available to those meeting
such criteria and clearing the selection process.
ELAC South Gate Scholarship
The East Los Angeles College Foundation in concert with the Dean
of Southgate campus has developed The ELAC Southgate Award to
help ELAC Southgate students reach their personal potential and
educational goals by providing financial assistance to further
their academic or vocational education.
*Monterey Park Hospital Two-Year Nursing Scholarship
Monterey Park Hospital has developed with the Foundation a one
time award of a $20,000 scholarship for a deserving Nursing
student at the East Los Angeles College to allow the recipient
the devote their full attention on completing their two-year
nursing degree and passing the NCLEX-RN exam. The scholarship
focuses on addressing the nursing crisis in California and
getting corporate involvement from the community. This generous
scholarship opportunity was developed with the efforts of Philip
Cohen and Ericka Smith of Monterey Park Hospital.
English Department Payroll Deduction Scholarship
In a concerted effort, members of the ELAC English Department
have contributed scholarship funds through payroll deduction
to offer its first student scholarships in 2004.
Nicholas Tan Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship established to honor Nicholas Tan, a former Vice
President of Administrative Services. In an effort to preserve
this scholarship, President Moreno made the first and largest
contribution to keep this award alive through the Foundation.
Gary Yamauchi Business Community Scholarship
A scholarship established through a donation from Mr. Yamauchi,
an active Board Director of the ELAC Foundation. Mr. Yamauchi
is a well known member of the community and is President and
CEO of Tri-Star Vending.
Scholarship Endowments
J.A. and M. Johnson Future Teachers Scholarship
J.A. and M. Johnson Future Teachers Scholarship Endowment (Established
in 1999)
The East Los Angeles College Foundation through alumni outreach
developed The J.A. and M. Johnson Future Teachers Scholarship
Endowment Award. Joseph Johnson attended college at ELAC and
upon his retirement from teaching in 1999, he donated a gift
to the college to help future teachers reach their educational
goals by providing financial assistance to further their academic
education. He specifically requested the award be granted to
a student coming from a single parent family, realizing the financial
challenges would be greater in these families.
Max and Marie Offenburg Family Scholarship
Max and Marie Offenberg Family Scholarship Endowment
The Offenberg Family Trust bequeathed a total of $100,000 in
honor of Dr. Offenberg, who had maintained a medical practice
and served the community for many years. The award recognizes
that there is more to success in life than a “high GPA” and
that students who are not at the top of their class academically
also deserve a chance. The scholarship criteria include financial
need, motivation, and a sincere desire to become a contributing
member of society – including trade as well as professional
careers.
Johnson J. Liu Asian Scholarship
Johnson J. Liu Scholarship Endowment (Established in 2001)
As a keynote speaker for a previous ELAC Asian Scholarship Banquet,
Mr. Johnson Liu was active in helping to raise money for scholarships.
To further his commitment, he donated $10,000 to the Foundation
to create a scholarship endowment under his name to help guarantee
the continuity of the Asian Scholarship Program. The award has
been established to help students of Asian/Pacific Islander descent
reach their educational goals and academic endeavors. Mr. Liu,
Chief Executive Officer of Zengen, Inc., is committed to offering
educational opportunities to those with the highest need.
Ramon Ramos Memorial Scholarship
Ramón S. Ramos Memorial Scholarship Endowment (Established
in 2002)
The East Los Angeles College Foundation produces an annual fundraising
event, the Concurso de Ballet Folklorico, under the directorship
of Rebecca Ramos-Valesquez, the daughter of Ramón Ramos.
With the tremendous help of the Ramos family in producing the
folklorico, the annual event helps raise money for the Ramon
Ramos Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The scholarship was instituted
in honor of Ramón Ramos for his many contributions to
the community and to the East Los Angeles College Foundation.
The scholarship was established to aid students that have shown
a commitment to the community through volunteer activity by providing
financial assistance to further their academic goals.
Title V Cooperative Endowment (Established in 2003)
With the help of the Title V Federal Grant, the Foundation developed
a scholarship endowment fund with the contributions from individuals
and the corporate community – Mervyn’s, Los Angeles
Times, and Los Angeles Chinese Women’s Club. A total
of $65,000 has been raised to be applied to the dollar for
dollar match portion of the federal grant. The matching funds
have contributed to the following scholarships: Los Angeles
Chinese Women’s Club, Los Angeles Times Award, and Dr.
Jeannie M.T. Yang (below).
Los Angeles Chinese Women’s
Club Scholarship
This award was established through a donation to the English
Department for students in the ESL program and to assist ESL
students of Asian descent who will be continuing in ESL series
classes.
Los Angeles Times Scholarship
The ELAC Foundation developed the Los Angeles Times Scholarship
Award for an ELAC student with a major in Journalism/Writing
or Graphic Arts.
Dr. Jeannie M.T. Yang Scholarship
The Dr. Jeannie M. T. Yang Scholarship Endowment was established
through a donation to the ELAC Foundation from the trust
of Jeannie M. T.Yang, a former adjunct faculty member in
the Social Science
department. Ms. Yang helped to develop the Chinese language
classes at ELAC. The scholarship will be awarded to students
taking Chinese
language classes that are non-traditional Chinese language
speakers. This scholarship is for students who demonstrate
financial need
with excellent academic standing. She hopes that her scholarship
will encourage more students to take Chinese as a foreign
language and increase interest in the Chinese culture.
Individual Scholarship Endowments can be set up through the
Foundation with a minimum donation of $20,000. The Foundation
is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and donations are tax deductible.
